The pavilion in the Southern Section stands 245 m east of Yellow Crane Tower and 93 m or so southwest of White Cloud Pavilion.

In Qing Era, Yellow Crane Beach had an inscription of the cursive character E (Goose). Legend holds that Wang Xizhi ever reaped a flock of geese below the Yellow Crane Tower. Once a time, Wang wrote down this character during the chat with a scholar. Then many people spread it by use of rubbings. As a matter of fact, the handwriter is Qing scholar Men Zhenguo (see “Character E Inscription – Stone Carving – Garden Landscape”).

In 1986, the park erected a Goose Plaque at the east end of the crescent-shaped pond based on the rubbing of the old inscription. North of the stele was erected a stone arch bridge so that the pavilion can be separated from White Dragon Pond visually. And the stele served as a wall for building a hexagon pavilion. The pavilion simply gets its name from the stele.

The pavilion faces the goose pond in the west. This 6-m-high quasi wood and stone structure is a quaint octagon featuring single eaves, lifted corners, pink walls and black tiles. The character E on the grey stone is 2.5 m high and 1.25 m wide. Both left and right faces have a 2.5 m door, through which you can walk from south to north or the other way around. Take a stroll therein and you can explore the Big Character and the quasi Jiangnan garden teeming with water lilies, misty fountain, playing geese and verdant willows.
