It is also called White Stupa or White Stupa of Yuan Dynasty. This stupa had its original home on the rocky beach before the old site of Yellow Crane Tower on the western side of Snake Mountain, Wuhcang. When the Yangtze Bridge was under way in 1955, it got removed to a new site on the western side mentioned above beside the flyover of Beijing-Guangzhou Railway. In 1984, it was relocated to the present site about 159 m in front of the main tower and 433 m west of White Cloud Pavilion. In 1956, it was ranked as Protected Provincial Historic Site by Hubei Provincial People’s Committee.

This stupa was erected by crown prince Koncak Buqa, titled the King Weishun, in the 3rd Year (1343) of Yuan’s Zhizheng Period. Its purpose was to place the ?arīra and Buddhist objects. On the other hand, it was ever wrongly called “Lantern of Master Kongming” as the stupa looks quite like a lantern and Zhu Geliang (styled Kongming) is said to have ignited lanterns here to guide Guan Yu’s water army. It is at times named Five-Wheel Stupa as there are five wheels concerning earth, water, fire, wind and air. Besides, it may be called “Stupa of Maha Bodhi.”

These names and erection eras could be found in General Gazetteer of Hubei by Jiaqing Period’s scholars like Chen Shi, The Gazetteer of Yellow Crane Mountain and Account of My Visiting to All Steles in the World by Hu Fengdan in Tongzhi Period.

The stupa boasts 9.36 m height and 5.68 m pedestal width. In construction, stones were main materials (outside) but some bricks were used as well (inside). So, the stupa can present itself in a vigorously natural manner. In terms of this stupa, the higher the smaller. It looks like a pyramid seated on the pedestal. In this way, the small stupa marinades in handsome beauty. The structure falls into pedestal, vase-shaped body, circular ring, canopy and roof. It is interesting to note that the roof is made of alloy.
