This pavilion, aka Pavilion of Immortal Lü, was first built atop Snake Mountain, Wuchang at the start of the Ming. In the early spring of 1993, it was built anew in the Northern Section, 175 m east of Yellow Crane Tower and 100 m west of north of White Cloud Pavilion.
Both Xiong Shipeng’s Collected Works of Recluses on Yellow Crane Tower and Hu Fengdan’s The Gazetteer of Yellow Crane Mountain write that in early Ming times, Yellow Crane Mountain had 4 jujube trees. These trees had lush foliage, but never bore fruit. Then a small hexagon pavilion named “Yearning for Jujube” was erected beside them. Such deed just added to the fun. But in a year, those trees had many jujubes spreading a dim fragrance. Strange to say, each jujube was as big as a melon. As a result, many branches and leaves fell on the ground as they could not bear the weight of the fruits anymore. It was said these were immortal jujubes. Eating a single jujube may let one become immortal. Soon the news arrived at the prefect and he ordered a military force to encircle the trees. Then he asked a page boy to pluck the fruit. All the prefect’s family bathed themselves and wore new costumes, waiting beside the altar to consume some such peaches and become immortal. But unexpectedly, the boy went away and never came back. He investigated the case and found the boy had consumed a jujube and become immortal. As soon as that happened, all other jujubes fell onto the world, turning into stones. The prefect burst into endless fury and regret. He returned to the mansion and sulked. In the evening, inspector came to soothe him and played chess with him for fun. At the height of the play when the prefect got the upper hand, there was some voice heard calling, “Prefect will fail!” “Prefect will fail.” In this way, he rightly lost that round. Both felt doubtful and searched that person around, only to find no trace in this regard. Just on that moment, a melodious flute started outside the window. They followed the voice and reached the pavilion. On the wall, there was written a quatrain,
When a flute is played in Yellow Crane Tower,
White duckweeds and red knotweeds thrive on the riverside.
Who can know what goes on in my heart?
Only the brisk zephyr and the bright moon.
