This garden 150 m east of Yellow Crane Tower and 137 m west of White Cloud Pavilion nestles at the west end of the northern slope of Snake Mountain. This 270 m2 garden is inhabited by more than 100 species including mason pines, black pines and marsh pines. Its construction started in late 1985 and ended next year. In construction, all unwanted trees and grasses were removed for the planting of mason pines, marsh pines and other well-suited large garden pines delivered from Huangpi County (now Huangpi District), Xinzhou County (now Xinzhou District), Hanyang County (now Caidian District), Wuchang District and Hongshan District. All those trees survived in that year. As time went on, other pines like some black pines, fern pines arrived here too. Such is how this expanse of evergreen pines took shape.
Pine is the lord of all trees. Cranes flying over pine woods has been considered a good omen. Inscription “Song He Bai Nian (100-year-old Pine and Crane)” is a token of perpetual happiness. In brief, the pine woods serve as a foil to the stately Yellow Crane Tower.
