Wuhan Branch of Chinese Writers Association and Changjiang Daily Press compiled Return of the Yellow Crane, containing more than 170 poems, lyrics, tunes, rhapsodies and essays.

South Tower has been open to the public upon being rebuilt.

The completion ceremony for the reconstruction took place in a solemn manner. More than 200 provincial, municipal Party and governmental leaders, heads of various diplomatic parties and people’s organizations and grass-roots representatives all attended the ceremony. Yellow Crane Tower has been officially open from the next day.

To celebrate the event, “Yellow Crane Tower Literature and Art Competition” kicked off through the concerted effort of units such as Guangming Daily, Changjiang Daily and Wuhan Writers Association. On April 27, the Pen Club hit the tower, soliciting to 80 veteran writers, poets, painters and calligraphers. Among them, 30 were invited to improvise poems, essays, artworks and inscriptions on site.

The Administrative Division was established. On April 17 of the same year, the division was designated as a county regiment unit upon the approval of [1985] No. 060 Document by Wuhan Municipal Commission for Public Sector Reform. And the staff should be of 200.

The 6th Meeting of the CPC Wuhan Municipal Committee passed a resolution that the reconstruction of the tower should be one of the Top 10 Affairs within 5 years. The tower should be smoothly completed and open to the general public.

June 22, 1982

President of the CPC Central Committee Hu Yaobang visited the construction site. After reviewing the situation and in particular the design drawing, President Hu stated, “You should rouse the masses to action and walk the mass line.”“This will save much time and effort.”

The construction project officially commenced.

April 4, 1981

The Office for Reconstruction of Yellow Crane Tower submitted The Report on Completing the Preliminary Preparations for the Reconstruction of Yellow Crane Tower. Copies of that report were sent to provincial and municipal leaders concerned. Governor Han Ningfu instructed that “the Office’s opinions are granted and the design team should not be dissolved. Expenditure should be allocated for making such preparations.” The reconstruction started therefrom.

Early in 1981

With the guidelines “Adjustment, Reform, Rectification and Improvement” in mind, the state government decided to prioritize the decrease of basic construction’ scale. Consequently, Hubei Provincial Planning Commission issued an announcement that calls for a suspence of the project.

August 1980

The routine preparation was handed over from Wuhan Municipal Division of Cultural Relics to Wuhan Municipal Garden and Forestry Administration. Both sides conducted the formalities concerned and Vice Mayor Wang Jie began to manage the tower reconstruction.

June 20, 1980

Hubei Provincial Planning Commission granted official approval on The Project Proposal.

Governor Han Ningfu presided over a review meeting of the tower’s design scheme. The meeting decided to accept the reconstruction scheme raised by architect Xiang Xinran from HuBei Architectural Design Institute (now Central-South Architectural Design Institute).

The State Construction Commission Design Administration invited heads and experts from nine government units like the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the State Administration of Urban Construction and Beijing-based Palace Museum to discuss problems facing the reconstruction for 5 times.

CPC Hubei Provincial Committee convened a standing meeting to receive the reporting on preparations for the tower. Provincial leaders instructed that they should walk the mass line to receive extensive opinions for pooling all ideas available.

CPC Wuhan Municipal Committee submitted The Report on Requesting Preparation Schemes for Restoration and Reconstruction of the August 7 Conference Site, the Eighth Route Army Wuhan Office, the Martyrs Mausoleum and Yellow Crane Tower Site to the CPC Provincial Committee. According to the report, “The tower reconstruction that has been fully prepared can commence immediately.”

February 27, 1977

CPC Wuhan Municipal Committee submitted The Report on Requesting the Instruction Concerning the Investment in Reconstruction of Yellow Crane Tower to CPC Hubei Provincial Committee, which stated that the complete reconstruction would cost RMB 3 million or so. Later the Provincial Committee decided that “the tower reconstruction should be listed in the state plan and not implemented for the time being.”

June 3, 1976

CPC Wuhan Municipal Committee approved the establishment of Leading Group for the Reconstruction Preparation of Yellow Crane Tower of Wuhan Municipal People’s Government along with the Office for Yellow Crane Tower Reconstruction under Wuhan Municipal Revolution Commission. In 1980, the office was renamed “Office for Reconstruction of Yellow Crane Tower under Wuhan Municipal People’s Government.”

According to The Opinions on the Site Selection for the Reonstruction of Yellow Crane Tower submitted by the Culture Bureau under Wuhan Municipal Revolution Commission, CPC Wuhan Municipal Committee decided that the tower should be rebuilt in the Qing-style.

The 13th Mayor Work Meeting of Wuhan Municipal People’s Committee reinvestigated the construction and instructed Wuhan Municipal Basic Construction Committee to complete the project before October 1 of the next year.

The 14th Meeting of Wuhan Municipal People’s Committee passed Opinions on the Reconstruction of Yellow Crane Tower that Wuhan Municipal Culture Bureau had submitted.

September 1957

Mao Zedong came to see the construction of Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge. When he heard there was a reconstruction project, he told attendant Wang Renzhong that the tower “should be reconstructed as it is a historic relic.” Later on, the Ministry of Railway allocated RMB 800,000 as the expenditure for reconstruction.

Guo Moruo visited Beppu-shi, Japan and left the city with two lines, “White clouds embody the millennium-long nostalgia, and the yellow crane therefore lingers around.” Later the city government erected a poem stele.

During the relocation of the stupa, a bronze vase was unearthed therein. The bottom and the abdomen have inscriptions “On the 18th Day (Jimou) of the 9th Month of the 27th Year (Jiashu, 1394) of Hongwu Period” and “Tathagata Stupa for Preserving the Sarira. May the country and the people be blessed with peace by the Buddha” respectively.

Mid February 1955

After surveying the geography, MoR Bridge Project Division decided that the Yangtze River Project should pass by Yellow Crane Tower Site Scenic Area on the western section of Snake Mountain. On April 20, the division asked Wuhan Municipal People’s Committee and other organs concerned “to address several problems in removing the tower.”

June 17, 1951

Wuhan Municipal Culture Bureau, as guided by the central government’s instruction on repairing historical relics and tombs, notified the Wuhan No. 1 Culture Center of surveying Yellow Crane Tower Scenic Area and Chen Youliang’s Tomb for reconstruction with allocated fund.
